Day one: 25 December – Dress to impress
- Go through your wardrobe and check you have a few nice outfits, suits or dresses you can fit into for interviews after a few too many mince pies. If not check out the sales over the Christmas period to stock up.
Day two: 26 December – Take the time to update your CV
- Ensure your deal sheet or project list is correct, and your latest acheivements are all added.
- Double check your mobile and email is there and correct.
Day three: 27 December – Update your Linkedin profile
- Ensure the dates of each role is added. Remove less relevant student roles.
- Add descriptions for each role and ensure you use key words. Ensure your job title is clear. Don’t just have Associate Director as the job title, say Associate Director – Project Management. You will come up in more Seaarches
- Ask for recommendations from present and former colleagues
- Ensure the picture is recent.
- Add educational details and any memberships or certificates you have
Day four: 28 December – Connect & Research
- Reach out to recruiters in your space, connect with them on Linkedin. Email them your CV and explaining what you are looking.
- Make a target list of your dream companies
- Apply to roles of interest and sign up to job alerts
Day five: 29 December – Practice interview questions

Day six: 30 December – Know your worth
- Check you are clear on all the details of your current package including benefits, LTIPS, carry, and pension contributions.
- Benchmark your salary with the market and consider what salary you want to ask for with a new role.
- Use a salary calculator to work out what you want based on what your takehome will be.
- Check out the costs of any increased commuting there might be and factor this in
Day seven: 31 December – Bonus & Clawbacks
- Ensure you are clear on when your bonus is paid so you can work out when a resignation could be poorly timed.
- Also check your contract to see if there is any pay back clauses affecting your bonus
- If your company has paid for any further development ie an MBA, CFA, MRICS, check your contract so you are clear if you have to repay any associated costs if you leave
Day 8: 1 January – Restrictive Covenants
- Check your contract so you are clear on any Restrictive Covenants in your contract, what future companies or locations could be caught by them and if you have a clause regarding gardening leave.
Day 9: 2 January – Notice Period
- Check your contract to see what your notice period is so you are clear on this
Day 10: 3 January – Network, network, network
- Sign up to networking events in the New Year to help broaden your network.
- Join Professional Networking Groups in your area
Day 11: 4 January – Prepare for tests & technical questions
- Practice modelling tests that could be used as part of the process
- Research current market trends so you are confident when asked
Day 12: 5 January – Get ready to wave goodbye to your current company!
- Type that resignation letter so you have it ready when you get that new offer.
- Consider and prepare for how you will deal with any counter offers with confidence
- Commit to it – New Year, New You
