In the UK, the statutory minimum notice period is 1 week after a month of employment, but most Employment Contracts specify 1–3 months, particularly at mid-senior level.
Over 60% of UK professionals surveyed by CIPD said they were able to negotiate an early release when moving roles, so it’s absolutely worth asking.
✔️ Start with transparency: explain why you’re requesting a shorter notice.
✔️ Offer solutions: a handover plan, knowledge transfer, or early project wrap-up.
✔️ Show goodwill: help them feel you’re leaving well, not just fast.
Finally, check your contract: some clauses allow for mutual agreement to shorten the period.
Be conscious that it may be your Line Manager needs to get approval or they need to resource your replacement first, so don’t be disappointed if a request is not immediately approved.
If you’re unsure how to approach it, speak to your recruiter. We do this every day, and it’s usually easier than you think. For assistance with your resignation letter, please see our template.
