What do we need to consider internally before starting an Executive Search?

In the war for Talent, Companies are required to hire faster, pay more, and do so with as smooth interview process as possible.

To prepare for a Search it helps to ask the right questions internally to understand your requirements, the role, and the person you are seeking.

We recommend the stakeholders involved consider:

▪️ Why is this position open?

▪️ How often has this position been open in the past 5 -10 years?

▪️ What type of person has been, would be most successful in this role?

▪️ Considering the last person who held this position, what was their greatest strength?

▪️ Where is the greatest room for improvement?

▪️ What are some of the projects and goals that need to be accomplished? What would success look like?

▪️ What are the urgent concerns for someone in this role? What needs to be done within the next 3 to 12 months?

▪️ What are the longer term projects and goals for this position?

▪️ What role and what autonomy will the individual have in setting direction, deadlines, priorities, projects, goals, etc.?

▪️ What level of support does this position receive in terms of resourcing, funding, equipment, training and development, etc.?

▪️ Who determines and approves the budget for this role and function?

▪️ What are the expectations placed on this role as stated by senior management?

▪️ What is the organisational structure above and below this role?

▪️ Where can a person go who is successful in this role? Is there a clear succession plans for them and what expectations are there regarding time frame?

▪️ What are some of the challenges currently facing the role?

▪️ What are some of the company’s market and growth opportunities? Are there resources available to exploit these opportunities?
