What are valid reasons for leaving your job & how should you communicate them professionally?

September 3, 2026

Most Candidates leave roles for a combination of reasons, and Employers expect this. The key is communicating your decision in a way that is mature, constructive and focused on growth. Common valid reasons include:

▪️ Limited progression opportunities: A clear reason, especially when backed by attempts to develop internally.

▪️Compensation misalignment: Fair to mention, but always paired with wider career motivations.

▪️Cultural or leadership differences: These should be stated neutrally, avoid negativity or blame.

▪️ Desire for new challenges: Many employers value ambition and appetite for growth.

▪️ Business changes or instability: Restructuring or shifting strategy often prompts reassessment.

When explaining your reasons, keep it concise and professional, emphasise what you’re moving towards, & avoid criticising your current Employer.
