In the UK, the statutory minimum notice period is 1 week after a month of employment — but many contracts specify 1–3 months, particularly at mid-senior level.
That said, over 60% of UK professionals surveyed by CIPD said they were able to negotiate an early release when moving roles — so it’s absolutely worth asking.
✔️ Start with transparency — explain why you’re requesting a shorter notice
✔️ Offer solutions — a handover plan, knowledge transfer, or early project wrap-up
✔️ Show goodwill — help them feel you’re leaving well, not just fast
Finally, check your contract — some clauses allow for mutual agreement to shorten the period.
If you’re unsure how to approach it, speak to your recruiter. We do this every day — and it’s usually easier than you think.
