If I work in a Project, Cost or Development role what Project Information do I need to put on my CV?

When updating your CV you should ensure that you have the details of the schemes you have worked on for your current role and the last 2 positions you have held.

We advise adding 3 – 4 projects per role and noting: 

  • The company where you did the project
  • The project name
  • The client name
  • The project size in sqft, if residential add the number of units, if a hotel add the number of keys or sqft 
  • The project value
  • The RIBA stages that you worked across, or pre-contract / post contract 
  • Procurement route and Method of Procurement
  • The type of contract used
  • Your personal roles & responsibilities on the project 
  • The status of the project i.e in planning, on site, completed etc.

Here are some examples for Project & Development Managers: 

Canning Square Manchester for Lendlease

  • Project Manager on a highly complex £150 million, 400,000sq/ft office led mixed use development with 55 private, intermediate and affordable housing units and flexible retail spaces at ground floor. I was responsible for the delivery of the scheme from inception through to contract award, taking overall responsibility for the scheme until Main Contractor appointment. 
  • Type of Project: Speculative Commercial Office & Residential Development 
  • Project Size: 400,000sqft office / 55 residential units 
  • Project Value: £400m
  • Roles & Responsibilities: Initial involvement was leading the residential component of the development and supporting the PD from feasibility through to obtaining planning. Following receipt of the consent I was responsible for the day to day management of the project with a Director, developing the design and procuring the works / entering into contract with the Main Contractor.
  • Project Stages worked on: RIBA stages 0-4 
  • Project Status: Complete 

Chelsea Barracks for Candy & Candy 

  • As the lead Project Manager I ran a design competition with five world class architects through to appointment of the architects at the end of 2013. I was then responsible for appointing the remaining members of the project team, developing the design proposals with the development team. We then prepared a planning application and gained consent for the £250 million scheme that comprises high end residential accommodation and a luxury hotel and retail.
  • Type of Project: Super prime Residential, Hotel and Retail (GF) development. 
  • Project Size: 200 Resi Units and 150 keys
  • Project Value: £400m 
  • Roles & Responsibilities: Ran a design competition with world renowned architects, day to day management of the project, appointing the remainder of the project team, leading discussions with planning authorities, PR consultancy etc. up to obtaining planning consent for the scheme. 
  • Project Stages worked on: RIBA Stages 0-3 
  • Project Status: Complete

Clapham Common, Lifestory 

  • Later living new build development comprising of two 4 story buildings that provide 75 homes. 
  • Procuring and managing consultants and contractors, ensuring design is fit for purpose and meets company specifications 
  • Timely and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders, including on-site operatives and senior management, to ensure that the project stays on track and within budget 
  • Managing budget, cash flows, and purchase orders, coordinating all planning and legislative signoffs 
  • £50m 
  • Residential 75 homes 
  • The value of the project: £60million 
  • Pre-contract, construction, completion and handover RIBA Stages 4 – 7 
  • Procurement route and Method of Procurement- Construction management as client. The form of contract – JCT Completed

Here are some examples for Cost Managers

100 North Ridge, Canary Wharf Group 

  • Size: 7 Floors of mixed commercial and retail space – Circa 15,000 m2 NIA 
  • Value: £75m 
  • Quantity Surveyor, answering to the Project Surveyor 
  • The complete cost and contract management of up to 15 sub-contract accounts, with individual account values ranging from £250,000 to over £2million. The cumulative value of the accounts currently stands at over £10million. 
  • Managing the monthly cost reporting process and feeding this back to the Commercial Manager and business senior leadership. This includes examining and identifying routes of recovery and entitlement under the contract
  • Handling the discovery and claim process on behalf of WCL for variations relating to existing building conditions and the risk responsibility matrix contained within the main contract 
  • Carry out the project valuation in conjunction with the senior surveyor and presenting this to the client. Lead the procurement process of subcontract orders, including tendering, negotiation of prices and placing orders. 
  • Negotiating contracts, variations, and final accounts throughout the duration of the project. 
  • Total management if sub-contract accounts, responsible for the drafting of, and issuing of payment notices, and handling account disputes and resolutions. 
  • Managing the relationships with our supply chain and third parties 
  • RIBA Stage: Predominately post contract, final design and construction process and final handover 
  • Methods of Procurement: Procurement carried out in line with the agreed specifications and company’s own established supply chain list 
  • Form of contract: JCT2016 Design and Build (with amendments)
  • Status: Ongoing on-site

UCL 

  • Size: 9 floors, mix of new building and retained structure. Circa 17000 m2 NIA 
  • Value: £100m 
  • RIBA stages: Predominately post contract, final design and construction process and final handover 
  • Assistant Surveyor, answering to the Project Surveyor 
  • Managed a variety of sub-contact accounts with a combined value of circa £3.5million. 
  • Led the procurement process of subcontract orders, including tendering, negotiation of prices and placing orders.
  • Negotiated contracts, variations, and final accounts throughout the duration of the project. 
  • Dealt with sub-contract accounts, including the drafting, and issuing of payment notices, and handling disputes and resolutions. 
  • Worked with a variety of parties on a day-to-day basis, ranging from suppliers and contractors, to client representatives and Local Authority Officers. 
  • Methods of Procurement: Procurement carried out in line with the agreed specifications and own established supply chain list 
  • Form of contract: JCT2011 Design and Build Contract (with amendments) 
  • Status: completed
