We are a UK Project Consultancy and are reviewing our notice periods for mid and more senior level hires. What do you think works best?

Whilst you might want to run through the implications with an employment lawyer, for most roles we find that 2 months can be very beneficial.

  • 1 month is a bit on the shorter side when looking to backfill the role.
  • 2 months is usually long enough to enable you to get a recruitment process underway and someone else in or working their notice, ensure they tie up loose ends and have them leave on a high note.
  • 3 months notice can mean the days can drag on and the employee can become less motivated and engaged in the role if not kept busy. From a practical perspective you really want to be running their workload down and doing a handover during this time. For roles that are harder to backfill, you might want to consider this further though and keep to 3 months if the benefits outweigh the risks.
