How can I improve my chances of being headhunted?

Here are few steps you can take which can really help:

  • Become noticeable through networking, events & attending seminars This can be a great way to become more visible and thus more likely for a Headhunter to notice you. Actively network at these events and hand out your business card to headhunters you meet.
  • Keep your Linkedin profile and online presence up to date Most headhunters will use a combination of Linkedin and online research to find candidates that fit their mandates. It’s vital to ensure your Linkedin profile is up-to-date, has key achievement and information regarding what you have been working across. If you add just your job titles, and not the sectors, or projects you have worked across, headhunters might not be able to interpret your strengths and fit for their search. It also helps to be active online, responsive to any messages you receive and ensure your profile has keywords related to your field.
  • Strive for success Headhunters want to represent and work with the best talent in the field. If you have won professional awards, have published articles and received recommendations, ensure this is reflected on your Linkedin profile and your CV.
  • Connect with Headhunters online Take the time to connect with Headhunters and you build your career and build a relationship with them. It’s mutually beneficial to keep in contact with them and get to know each other. If they have a good understanding of your career objectives and aspirations they are more likely to approach you for the perfect mandate.
  • Be easy to work with & have your CV ready Regularly update your CV and revisit it every 6 months even if you are not looking for a new role. Ensure any new projects, successes or achievements are not so that when you are approached you are prepared and can work with the Headhunter with ease.
  • Use a Headhunter to recruit for your team This can be a great way to build a rapport with a Headhunter, and develop a relationship, learn how they work and get yourself on their radar for the future.
